AUTOMOTIVE BLOW OFF HALO

All automotive plants use blow off systems for:-

  • Drying
  • Removing excess E-Coat
  • Removing dust and dirt
  • Removing static charges

FACT - The majority of automotive plants are using compressed air.

Let us consider just ONE blow off station (Most plants will have numerous)
 

COMPRESSED AIR

Number of nozzles per station 26 (Example)
Air consumption (capacity) per nozzle 29.4 scfm at 90psi
Air consumption of 26 nozzles 26 x 29.4 scfm = 764.4 scfm
Average compressor output per hp and kW 3 scfm per hp
HP or kW used to supply air for 26 nozzles 764.4 scfm / 3 scfm = 254.8 hp
To calculate the annual electricity costs.

We will use an electricity cost of 3.8p per kWh and a multiplier of 0.746 to convert hp to kW.

Annual Electricity costs = (motor full-load brake) x (0.746 kW/hp) x (motor efficiency) x (annual hours or operation) x (electricity cost)

Horsepower required to generate air to compressed air nozzles = 254.8hp
Annual hours of operation = 8,760 hours (3 shift continuous operation)
Full cost of electricity = 3.8 pence per kWh Motor efficiency = 90%

254.8hp x 0.746kW/hp x 90% x 8,760 hours x £0.038/kWh = £56,946

Cost to run ONE compressed air blow off system = £56,946 per year

 

AF1 CANNON BLOW OFF

Each station would use two high efficiency 18.5kW or 25hp electric blowers.
The blowers would actually use less than the full load rating of their motors
BUT lets assume worse case scenario (2 x 25hp blowers at full load)

50hp x 0.746kW/hp x 90% x 8,760 hours x £0.038/kWh = £11,175 per year

Cost to run ONE Air Cannon blow off system = £11,175 per year

 

Conclusion

Using a an electric blower driven air cannon system instead of a compressed air blow off station represents a saving of over 80% on energy costs.
